A structured approach to Chinese reading

Built around the HSK 3.0 framework

The new HSK syllabus brings together vocabulary, grammar, topics, communication tasks, and Chinese characters. It provides a broader reference for learning than a vocabulary list alone. Official HSK overview

For RealHSK, these five components frame the questions that matter when designing a reading:

• Vocabulary — Which words should a learner encounter at this level?
• Grammar — Which sentence patterns make the text manageable?
• Topics — What situations and subjects give the language a useful context?
• Communication tasks — What should the reader understand, such as a request, a description, or a sequence of events?
• Chinese characters — Which written forms should the learner recognise?

A level is a starting point

A level label helps you choose where to begin. It cannot describe everything that makes a text easy or difficult: sentence length, unfamiliar situations, and implied meaning also affect the reading experience.

Choose a text whose main idea you can follow without stopping at every sentence. If you need frequent help, try an easier reading. If you can follow it comfortably, explore another topic or a higher level.

Meet language in context

Read first for what happens and what the people mean. Then look more closely at useful words and sentence patterns.

The learning goal is to connect language with meaning: who is speaking, what they want, and how the situation develops. A familiar word can carry a different meaning in another sentence, so always consider the surrounding text.

Use support when you need it

The reader provides word lookup, pinyin, English translations, and audio. Use the combination that helps you keep reading.

A simple routine:

• Read for meaning. Follow the situation before looking up every unfamiliar word.
• Resolve what matters. Use word support or the English translation when something blocks your understanding.
• Listen and reread. Follow the text with the audio, then read it again at your own pace.
• Try with less support. Hide pinyin or English when you feel ready, and check what you can understand on your own.

This is a suggested practice routine, not a fixed sequence you must complete for every reading.

Reading practice can sit alongside lessons, conversation, writing, and exam preparation. Finishing a reading is not a certification of HSK proficiency.
