Connecting participants and shaping tone

Prepositions introduce participants and settings, conjunctions join comparable units, and particles connect an utterance to the conversation. One written word may perform different jobs. Read its position and the surrounding predicate rather than relying only on its dictionary gloss.

Learning goals (7)
  • Where an action happens.
  • Participants with 和 and 对.
  • Joining nouns with 和.
  • Possession and description with 的.
  • Completed-event 了.
  • Sentence-final particles.
  • Calling attention with 喂.

在

Where an action happens

在+place normally precedes the action verb when locating that action. With no action verb, 在 can itself state location.

我在家吃饭。

Wǒ zài jiā chī fàn.

I eat at home.

More

Pitfall: Place 在家 before 吃饭 in the basic location-of-action pattern.

和、对

Participants with 和 and 对

和 introduces a companion; 对 introduces a target or attitude. These phrases generally precede the predicate.

我和朋友一起吃饭。

Wǒ hé péng you yī qǐ chī fàn.

I eat with a friend.

More

Pitfall: 对他很好 concerns treatment; 和他吃饭 concerns companionship.

和

Joining nouns with 和

和 links parallel nouns or noun phrases. For separate clauses, use an appropriate clause connector or two clauses.

我买了苹果和香蕉。

Wǒ mǎi le píng guǒ hé xiāng jiāo.

I bought apples and bananas.

More

Pitfall: Avoid using 和 as a universal replacement for English and between sentences.

的

Possession and description with 的

Place the possessor or modifier before 的 and the noun after it. 的 may be omitted in some close relationships.

这是老师的书。

Zhè shì lǎo shī de shū.

This is the teacher's book.

More

Pitfall: 我的书 follows possessor+的+noun, not the English noun-first pattern.

了

Completed-event 了

Verb+了 presents an event as realized or bounded in context. It is not a universal past-tense ending.

我买了一本书。

Wǒ mǎi le yī běn shū.

I bought a book.

More

Pitfall: For a simple denial of occurrence, use 没买; do not retain perfective 了 mechanically.

吧、了 、吗、呢、呢、呢

Sentence-final particles

吗 makes a yes/no question; 吧 can soften a suggestion; 呢 can ask a follow-up or mark a continuing situation. Final 了 can signal a new state.

我们走吧。

Wǒ men zǒu ba.

Let's go.

More

Compare 我们走吧 (suggestion), 他来了 (newly relevant situation or arrival in context), 你去吗 (yes/no), 你呢 (follow-up), 我的书呢 (where is my book in context), 他看书呢 (ongoing situation). The numbered 呢 labels in the source are sense labels; these examples explain functions without asserting an unverified one-to-one number assignment.

Pitfall: 你呢? means and you? Particles express discourse functions, not one fixed English word.

喂

Calling attention with 喂

喂 is common when answering a phone or calling out. Tone and relationship affect politeness.

喂,你好!

Wèi, nǐ hǎo!

Hello!

More

Pitfall: Calling 喂 to a stranger may sound abrupt; use an appropriate polite greeting.
