HSK 2Lesson 6 of 13 · 5 grammar points
Manner, experience and maintained states
地 commonly marks manner before an action, 得 introduces a complement after it, and 过 and 着 describe different views of an event. The spelling alone is not enough: recognize what the marker connects or contributes.
Learning goals (5)
- 的、地 and 得.
- Experience with 过.
- Continuing states with 着.
- Particles and assumptions.
- Verb–complement phrases.
得、地
的、地 and 得
的 links an attributive modifier to a noun; 地 can mark manner before a verb; 得 introduces a complement after a verb or adjective.
她高兴地笑了。
She laughed happily.
More
Attributive: 认真的学生. Preverbal manner: 认真地学习. Postverbal assessment: 学得很认真. The markers share the neutral pronunciation de but have different structural jobs. Some short adverbials may omit 地 naturally.
Pitfall: 她笑得很高兴 uses a postverbal complement instead.
过
Experience with 过
Verb+过 states that an experience has occurred before the reference time, without focusing on a particular completed instance.
我去过北京。
I have been to Beijing.
More
Pitfall: 没去过 denies the experience; do not retain affirmative 了 mechanically.
着
Continuing states with 着
着 after a verb can present a maintained state or ongoing accompanying activity.
门开着。
The door is open.
More
Pitfall: 开着 describes the resulting open state; 开了 can describe opening or change.
呢、吧、的、啊
Particles and assumptions
吧 can soften a guess, 呢 can sustain a question or stance, 的 can reinforce an assertion, and 啊 adds interpersonal tone. Meaning depends on context.
他是老师吧?
He is a teacher, isn't he?
More
你在做什么呢? sustains an information question; 他大概已经走了吧 expresses a tentative assessment; 我会来的 reassures; 真好啊 reacts warmly. Match a source sense by context rather than assigning every spelling of a particle to one lesson.
Pitfall: Do not translate every 吧 as let's.
听懂
Verb–complement phrases
A complement follows the verb to describe its result, direction or manner. The whole expression forms one predicate unit.
我听懂了。
I understood what I heard.
More
Pitfall: 听 is the activity; 懂 supplies the successful result.
