Larger phrases doing familiar jobs
A phrase ending in 的 may substitute for a noun; several verbs can share a subject; a pivotal participant belongs to two predicates. Classify phrases by the job they perform in the larger sentence as well as by their internal shape.

Noun phrases ending in 的
A modifier+的 can stand for an understood noun, allowing reference to the red one or mine.
我要红的。
I want the red one.

Serial-verb phrases
Several verb phrases can share a subject and describe linked actions, means or purpose.
我去商店买东西。
I go to the shop to buy things.

Pivotal phrases
In 请他来, 他 is both the person invited and the subject of 来. Identify this shared participant.

Nominal phrases
A nominal phrase fills noun-like roles such as subject or object, even when it contains a clause modifying a noun.
我喜欢你买的书。
I like the book you bought.

Verbal phrases
A verbal phrase includes its verb and associated material. It can describe an activity even when more than one word is involved.
他想去北京。
He wants to go to Beijing.

Pitfall: 去北京 is the desired activity, not a noun naming Beijing alone.
非常漂亮
Adjectival phrases
A degree word and adjective, optionally with related material, can function as one descriptive phrase.
这件衣服非常漂亮。
This item of clothing is very beautiful.
