Strong negation and relational frames

Minimal quantities can support emphatic negation. 越…越… relates two changing factors; before/after frames locate events; colloquial challenges evaluate another person's reaction. These are meaning-bearing constructions, not arbitrary decorations around a verb.

一…也/都+不/没…

Not even one

一+classifier+noun+也/都+不/没 negates even a minimal quantity.

我一本书也没买。

Wǒ yī běn shū yě méi mǎi.

I didn't buy a single book.

More

Pitfall: Keep the negative element; otherwise the minimizer's meaning changes.

一点儿也不

Not at all

一点儿也不+adjective or suitable predicate strongly denies a degree.

我一点儿也不累。

Wǒ yī diǎnr yě bù lèi.

I am not tired at all.

More

Pitfall: This is not the same as 有点儿累, a little tired.

越…越…

Correlated change

越…越… links an increasing degree or continuation of one factor to change in another.

越学越有意思。

Yuè xué yuè yǒu yì si.

The more I study, the more interesting it becomes.

More

Pitfall: Both parts need a meaningful relationship; it is not a generic and connector.

以后

Before and after

Place an event or time before 以前/以后 or 前/后 to locate another action relative to it.

吃饭以后,我去散步。

Chī fàn yǐ hòu, wǒ qù sàn bù.

After eating, I go for a walk.

More

Pitfall: Chinese puts the reference event before the before/after marker.

什么

Dismissive 什么

X什么 can challenge the need or reason for an action instead of asking a neutral question.

急什么?还有时间。

Jí shén me? hái yǒu shí jiān.

What's the hurry? There is still time.

More

Pitfall: The tone can sound dismissive; do not use it as a neutral information request.

该…了

Time to act

该…了 says the time or circumstances now call for an action.

该睡觉了。

Gāi shuì jiào le.

It's time for bed.

More

Pitfall: This is a current obligation or timing judgment, not necessarily a past event.

在…上/下/中

Abstract settings

在…上/下/中 can frame an aspect, influence or process as well as a literal location.

在老师的帮助下,我学会了。

Zài lǎo shī de bāng zhù xià, wǒ xué huì le.

With the teacher's help, I learned how.

More

在学习上 in the area of study; 在帮助下 with help; 在讨论中 during discussion. The nouns conventionally select their localizer, so do not swap 上/下/中 at random.

Pitfall: The choice of 上、下、中 depends on conventional meaning, not free substitution.
