  1. Word formation and modal meaningsAffixes, role labels and verb compounds have lexical constraints. Modal words distinguish necessity, advice and willingness. Learn conventional combinations and interpret the modal before deciding whether the sentence makes a request, an obligation or a prediction.6 grammar points
  2. Questions that no longer askQuestion words can ask for information, refer to any member of a set or leave a referent indefinite. 他想吃点儿什么 is not necessarily a question. Inclusive reference and alternatives also depend on who is present in the conversation.5 grammar points
  3. Specific objects and repeated unitsClassifier choice helps specify the shape or kind of a noun. Action classifiers distinguish complete passes from occurrences or small acts. Repeated classifiers distribute a property across every relevant member instead of merely increasing a number.4 grammar points
  4. Degree, probability and speaker expectationsThese adverbs cover degree, scope, timing, frequency, confidence and necessity. Similar English glosses can hide different uses. Pay particular attention to no need versus cannot, planned repetition versus actual repetition, and a long-awaited outcome versus a merely completed one.8 grammar points
  5. Participants, purpose, evidence and conditionsPrepositional phrases tell you who benefits, where movement aims, what evidence is used and why an action is intended. Clause markers then connect conditions and outcomes. 把 and 被 change the way affected participants are organized, not the underlying event roles.8 grammar points
  6. Compact reference and perspectiveApposition names the same referent twice; repeated units distribute actions; set phrases compress evaluations. 看来 signals inference, while 在…看来 attributes a judgment to someone. Neither is necessarily a literal act of looking.7 grammar points
  7. Change, appearance and framing越来越 tracks one changing scale, whereas appearance expressions hedge a judgment. 除了 can include or exclude depending on the later clause. Starting-point and perspective frames limit the scope within which the main statement holds.8 grammar points
  8. Strong negation and relational framesMinimal quantities can support emphatic negation. 越…越… relates two changing factors; before/after frames locate events; colloquial challenges evaluate another person's reaction. These are meaning-bearing constructions, not arbitrary decorations around a verb.7 grammar points
  9. Complex subjects, modifiers and resultsActivities and clauses can become topics or subjects, while multiple modifiers narrow a noun. Result and directional complements extend beyond literal motion to recognition, onset and continuation. Interpret the whole verb–complement combination.7 grammar points
  10. Possibility, intensity and rhetorical questionsPotential complements evaluate attainability, degree complements intensify, and elapsed-time complements locate an event relative to now. Rhetorical questions often remind or challenge rather than request new information. Keep these distinctions separate from ordinary tense.6 grammar points
  11. Affected objects and accompanying actions把 foregrounds what is affected and usually needs a meaningful outcome; 被 foregrounds the affected participant as subject. An accompanying action marked with 着 overlaps another action. Preserve event roles when rephrasing between constructions.6 grammar points
  12. Comparisons and presented eventsComparisons may express equality, an increased degree or a measured difference in action. Location-first structures introduce appearances or disappearances. 是…的 can also assure rather than focus a past event, and verb repetition can accommodate an object plus a complement.9 grammar points
  13. Sequence, alternatives and parallel activity先…再… orders actions, 或者 offers alternatives, 一会儿 alternates, 一边 overlaps and 不但 adds a point. These relationships are not interchangeable. Choose a pair that matches the actual temporal or argumentative relationship.7 grammar points
  14. Hypotheses, conditions and purposes如果 and 的话 introduce hypotheses. 只有 makes a condition necessary; 只要 presents it as sufficient. 为了 gives a goal. A short action with 了 can precede a future result, so do not equate its marker with past time.6 grammar points
  15. Estimating quantitiesApproximation can be explicit with 大概 or compact with adjacent numbers. The reader must distinguish an estimate from a numeral's ordinary place-value reading. Interpret 两三 as two or three, not twenty-three, when it precedes a duration unit.2 grammar points
