Conversation: insistence and concession

These spoken constructions perform social actions: dismissing worries, keeping matters separate, insisting on compliance or accepting a drawback. Their tone is part of what must be learned. A grammatically correct sentence can still be too forceful for a new acquaintance.

动词+一X是一X

Taking what one can get

V+一X是一X accepts whatever amount or instance is available, often pragmatically.

能学一点是一点。

Néng xué yī diǎn shì yī diǎn.

Whatever little I can learn is worth learning.

Nothing worth reacting to

有什么好X的 challenges the need for a reaction; 没什么好X的 states there is no reason for it.

Keeping matters separate

X是X，Y是Y insists two matters should not be confused.

No alternative to acting

X也得X，不X也得X emphasizes that an action is unavoidable.

去也得去，不去也得去。

Qù yě děi qù, bù qù yě děi qù.

You have to go whether you want to or not.

Just do it

X就是了 presents an action as sufficient or straightforward, often reassuring or instructing.

Disputing with 还…呢

还X呢 can challenge a claim or expectation. In other contexts, 还…呢 may simply describe continuation.

Hái shuō bù lèi ne, nǐ dōu shuì zháo le.

You say you're not tired, but you've already fallen asleep.

Go on with your own action

你X你的吧 lets someone continue their activity while the speaker handles something else.

你忙你的吧，我自己来。

Nǐ máng nǐ de ba, wǒ zì jǐ lái.

Go on with your work; I'll do it myself.

An emphatic instruction

让/叫你X你就X demands compliance with an instruction.

让你坐你就坐吧。

Insistence despite obstacles

说什么也得 or 怎么也得 expresses firm necessity regardless of objections.

This has to be done properly, no matter what.

Accepting an undesirable degree

X就X点儿吧 concedes a drawback as tolerable.

Let it cost a little more; good quality is what matters.
