Idiomatic repetition and limits

Repeated forms distribute actions or depict extensive thought, while 好不容易 signals an achieved result after effort. 算了 and 得了 manage the conversation; 到…为止 defines a boundary. Do not infer meanings by counting repeated characters or negatives.

This and that in repeated action

A这A那 describes repeated attention, questions or objections directed at many things.

他一来就问这问那。

Tā yī lái jiù wèn zhè wèn nà.

As soon as he arrived, he asked about this and that.

问这问那 keep asking about this and that; 挑这挑那 find fault with this and that. The latter tends to imply criticism; these are not neutral substitutes in every context.

Multiple directions or repeated consideration

左A右B forms conventional expressions for looking around, thinking repeatedly or mixed directions.

我左思右想，还是没有答案。

Wǒ zuǒ sī yòu xiǎng, hái shì méi yǒu dá àn.

I thought it over from every angle but still had no answer.

左思右想 think repeatedly/from many angles; 左顾右盼 look around. Literal left-right directions are not necessarily intended in these fixed forms.

好不容易

After considerable difficulty

好容易 and 好不容易 can both mean finally after effort in appropriate contexts.

我好不容易才找到这里。

Wǒ hǎo bù róng yì cái zhǎo dào zhè lǐ.

I finally found this place after considerable difficulty.

好不容易才找到 and 好容易才找到 can both emphasize effort before success. 很容易就找到了 instead emphasizes ease. The apparent negative pattern requires idiomatic interpretation.

Lỗi hay gặp: The negative-looking form does not simply mean it was not easy at all without an achieved result.

那倒也是

Conceding a point

那倒是 or 那倒也是 acknowledges a point raised by the other person, often while retaining a broader reservation.

那倒也是，我们再想想吧。

Nà dào yě shì, wǒ men zài xiǎng xiǎng ba.

That's true too; let's think it over again.

Dropping a matter with 算了

算了 proposes letting something go, abandoning a plan or ceasing to pursue an issue.

算了，别再提这件事了。

Suàn le, bié zài tí zhè jiàn shì le.

Forget it; let's not bring this up again.

Mixed or scattered contributions

A一+measure，B一+measure depicts contributions or actions from different sides, sometimes without order.

大家你一句我一句地讨论着。

Dà jiā nǐ yī jù wǒ yī jù de tǎo lùn zhe.

Everyone discussed it, each putting in a word.

你一句我一句 has different people contributing turns; 这里一堆那里一堆 describes separate piles across locations. Check the chosen nouns and verbs for a natural distributive reading.

Scattered locations with 东一…西一

东一A，西一A describes things or actions scattered about.

纸上东一笔西一笔，看不出写的是什么。

Zhǐ shàng dōng yī bǐ xī yī bǐ, kàn bù chū xiě de shì shén me.

Marks are scattered over the paper; you cannot tell what it says.
